Actually a coin of that size use to be $20 dollars originally. Until FDR removed us off the gold standard, there were almost no inflation in US, except for price fluctuations due to the market. Check out this article: http://www.financialsense.com/fsu/editorials/gnazzo/2004/1020.html
They still put these “denominations” on the gold, silver and platinum coins because they become legal tender and its easier to go through customs. If they don’t have denominations then they might be taxed.
