The Art of Spoiler Avoidance

When I really anticipate something there is always some joker who wants to spoil it. Sure, most of the time people open their cake hole without thinking, obviously it isn’t always malicious. Regardless of intent, books and film endings seem to be something people like to “share”.

There isn’t enough time for me to list all the books and films people have spoiled. Of course I still get enjoyment, but the enjoyment is diminished when twists are revealed.

When the last Harry Potter came out the spoilers were everywhere, someone even painted a spoiler in 2-foot-high letters on a motorway bridge!

This time I was ready for them. I got the book on Saturday morning and have avoided any media where spoilers might be posted. There was a close call when someone mentioned to me to avoid Pownce, Facebook and Twitter. I don’t use my Pownce account anymore but I was much more careful when I checked in at the other two.

Now I can read any site I like because I managed to finish the book in a rush. In a way I diminished the enjoyment by rushing to finish it rather than properly enjoy it, but I am glad I did because the alternative would have spoiled it more.

Do you know why people post spoilers? What do they get out of it? If you have a theory do let me know in the comments …

Just 2 seconds ago I came across this woman’s site where she posted “spoilers” for HP7 that were totally WRONG. @#! Just like you, I rushed to finish it this weekend just so I wouldn’t chance across anything to ruin the surprise for me. Fortunately, HP7 is so complicated that it’s not that easy to spoil even if you read the last few chapters first.

I didn’t get to enjoy the last season of American Idol because I kept coming across the spoilers each week including the final show. Drat the UK for the delayed showing!!

Yeah even worse for the UK is there are still a lot of people with only terrestrial TV channels, that means USA gets shows (and discusses them), then Sky and then ages after the rest of the country.

For example my most recent fave tv show is Heroes, it was on Sci-Fi channel but BBC2 has bought exclusive rights and is showing season 1 while USA airs season 2 (although I hope the rumour that they will run straight into season 2 is true, otherwise UK will forever be over a year behind)

Don’t you dare say anything more about Heroes. In fact, when you did previously, I skipped the posts. :P We have Sky and recorded the whole season for Heroes but still have at least 6 or 7 episodes to watch.

I try very hard not to post spoilers, don’t worry :) Although do come back to that post and tell me if you agree with my assessment of the ending!
