Could Social Media Give the Rest of the World a Say In USA Politics?
Aaron posted up a piece on social media and politics. I would have commented but I think my thought is a little off-topic plus I have no right to meddle in politics over the pond :)
My thought is this. The last two elections in the US of A haven’t particularly been celebrated in the rest of the world, particularly the last one. It would be fair to say there are a lot of people who wish we had a time machine.
Ask many brits and you will find there is a feeling that Mr Blair has been heavily influenced by the current Bush regime. The US voted in our Prime Ministers boss. We don’t get to choose but have to put up with the decision anyway. When America drops a stinker the rest of the world have to smell it. There have been up to now no matches to waft, we have to either hold our breath or suck it up. Could social media be a way the rest of us have a modicum of influence over the result next time?
Can you remember all the “we are sorry, I voted for the other guy” apologies after the last pres election? The internet was buzzing with “WTF?” “Yeah, sorry dude”. Before the next one there will be a lot of interest and advice from the rest of the world. Could some votes be influenced?
It will be interesting to see …

I really doubt that people outside the USA are going to have any influence. The biggest issues in the US revolve around domestic issues like the economy and the like.
The people likely to be most influence by foreigners are also the ones least likely to have voted for Bush in the first place.
It is sad that Blair hasn’t had a good kicking at the ballot box. He deserved it over his handling over Iraq but as ever domestic issues override foreign policy. How we are ever going to look the Iraqis in the eye ever again?

Guess we will have to see but I can live in hope :)
