Spoiled Developer

It’s easy to be spoiled as a developer. You can quickly get used to having a team around you, database administrators, server guys, webmasters, copywriters, designers, front-end coders, interface/usability people …

While it is fun learning everything from scratch all over again now I am working in LAMP, sometimes I miss being able to lean across a desk and just get answers. Of course I wouldn’t trade being able to see my wife and daughter any time I like, but it is an unexpected downside of working from home.

Now you could say IM/email partially solve this but that supposes you have people on your contact list that

  1. you are SURE are happy to receive your random shouts of geek pain
  2. have the answers
  3. know who you are

Because while I have people on my contacts who meet a couple of those criteria but not all three (mainly (1) is the sticking point) I have found myself doing stuff I haven’t done in ages; read technical books and visit forums. Just today my Apache books arrived. Since I stopped working on books I have barely even glanced at one, now I am actually properly reading them again (and enjoying it which is even more scary).

It really is like it’s the 90’s all over again. Exciting stuff.
