Five Things Meme
Nick, you bugger.
OK so I have been tagged for this Meme. It seems a ton of people have already taken part so I won’t be a grumpy sod and dodge this one. Problem is my life is a pretty open book, there is very little I haven’t already written about somewhere on the internets. Between The Google and archive.org the web knows all my secrets I think. I will have a go though …
Five things not commonly known about me, probably.
- I met my wife Clare, when I was 16. She is my only long-term relationship. I think this is a nice thing.
- One of the (many) things I am not any good at all is sports. Any sport. I’m useless. Don’t even ask. The only sport I had any ability above zero for was basketball but I have poor eyesight, can’t catch or throw, have no coordination or grace, am not very tall and quite clumsy so this is not to say I am any good just the only sport I have ever been picked for a team for (usually am the guy at the end who hasn’t been picked but one team is forced to take). Tell a lie, I was once goalie for a school soccer team for a couple of minutes because it was raining and the main goalie wanted to go home.
- I was born in Canada but apart from that had never been outside the UK until my late teens (went to Gran Canaria with Clare and spent the week with food poisoning). This is why I like to travel to new places I think.
- While I have made a career out of being a geek I wanted to be a cartoonist or childrens book illustrator until I left school at age 16 and decided to get “a real job”. Thank God I did, I would have been living on the streets. I can doodle a bit but not enough to make a living.
- Like Nick and Jeremy I am an introvert. This might come as a surprise to anyone who has attended one of my classes or heard me speak but it’s true. I have given talks to hundreds of people but find it very difficult to make small talk or mingle at parties. This article explains it pretty well. Online I am far more chatty than in real life, I can make conversation in IRC/IM far more easily than I can over the phone or in person.
People more interesting than me who I would like to see carry this on: D’Arcy Norman, Plip, Darren Rowse, Sarah Pullman, David Hobby
